Install SimpleRisk Virtual Appliance (Virtualbox)
This guide offers comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for importing the SimpleRisk VirtualBox appliance. It is tailored for users who already have Oracle VirtualBox installed. While the instructions are primarily based on Oracle VirtualBox version 7.x, they should be largely applicable to other versions as well. If you run into any issues, please feel free to contact us at support@simplerisk.com.
- After downloading the SimpleRisk VirtualBox appliance from https://www.simplerisk.com/download, extract the contents of the downloaded zip file to your preferred location for storing the virtual machine.
- Once you have installed VirtualBox, launch the application and click on “File” in the top menu, then select “Import Appliance.” This will open a new window prompting you to choose the appliance you wish to import. Click on the folder icon to browse for the virtual appliance. Navigate to the folder where you saved the SimpleRisk virtual machine image and select the file named “simplerisk-20250828-001.ova” (or the latest version available). After selecting the file, click “Open.”

- Click on “Import” and then choose “Agree” to accept the license agreement. You will see a notification indicating that the virtual appliance is being imported. Once the import process is complete, you can select the image and click on “Start” to initiate the booting of the new virtual appliance.

- Upon initial startup, you will be prompted to enter a password. This is due to the SimpleRisk virtual appliance utilizing an encrypted partition for security. Please note that the default username and password are both set to “simplerisk.”

Please note that the password “simplerisk” is not considered secure for the “simplerisk” user account. To enhance your account security, you can change your password by executing the “passwd” command. Enter “simplerisk” as your current password, and then select a new, strong password that you can easily remember. Additionally, if you need to find the IP address of your appliance, you can do so by running the “ifconfig” command. - Open a web browser on your host system or any device connected to the same local network. Enter the IP address of your SimpleRisk server in the browser's URL bar and press Enter.
You will then be directed to the default admin account creation page. Simply fill in your details, and your account will be automatically set up.
